Choosing an Instrument Type Parents, please share this information with your child with deciding which type of instrument is best for your child. Anyone can learn to play an instrument. It just takes a little time and practice. Just remember that everyone has to begin as a beginner—even professional musicians! What instrument should I choose? You might start by picking the instrument that has your favorite sound. The descriptions here will also help you choose. There really isn’t any instrument that is better for boys or for girls. Your band director can help you be sure that the instrument you want to play is just right for you. Selecting the right instrument will help you enjoy band! |
Single Horn For the horn it’s two hands for beginners, and for expert’s too, because you play it partly by moving your right hand inside its bell. It takes some practice, but there is always an important place in the band for a good player. |
Clarinet There is a large family of clarinets that play and sound alike, from the little E-flat clarinet to the contrabass, which may be taller that you! The B-flat clarinet, is the most popular. You’ll find many friends playing this clarinet, because the band uses more of them than any other instrument. |
Oboe The oboe is not the loudest instrument by far, yet its tone is so colorful that everyone notices it. If you like to be noticed, it’s a good choice for you, because the oboist gets to play many beautiful solo melodies in band music. |
Trombone The trombone sounds and even looks different from other instruments. It has a big, deep sound, and trombonists learn to move the slide that makes the whole instrument longer for low notes and shorter for high notes. If you’re good at carrying a tune, the trombone may be just the instrument for you. |
