2. The head joint can simply be swabbed as above. From time-to-time, the head joint should be cleaned thoroughly but this should be done only under the direct supervision of the flute teacher or an experienced flutist. Remove the crown and all its parts and wash (except tuning cork) in warm water and castile soap. Rinse in clear water and wipe dry. Reassemble the parts of the head joint. Since the position of the cork affects the playing of the flute, it must be located precisely with the gauge mark on the cleaning rod (when the end of the rod touches the cork, the mark must be in the center of the embouchure hole). |

3. Every month or so, oil the key mechanism with Selmer Key Oil. Use sparingly, because too much oil will collect dust and dirt. After oiling, work the key and wipe off excess oil. Oil the keys held by long screws by backing off the screws about half their length. After the oil seeps into the key hinges, retighten the screws. 1 4. A small camel’s hair brush should be used to remove dust and lint that gathers around the posts and springs and under key rods. 5. Wipe fingerprints off the body and keys of the instrument after playing and before putting the instrument in its case. The Selmer Polishing Cloth is recommended for this because its silicone coating protects finishes against perspiration and fingerprints. |

Care of Flutes and Piccolos 1. Keep bore of instrument free from dirt and dust by swabbing occasionally with metal cleaning rod and soft cloth. Be sure that the metal rod is completely covered by the cloth to avoid scratching or gouging the inside of the instrument. Never use water because it will damage the pads. Never use any chemical cleaning agent on a Resonite piccolo because it may damage the plastic body. The head joint can simply be swabbed as above. |
