Care of Trombones

Cleaning:

To protect your instrument’s finish, never clean with hot water, chemical agents, or harsh detergents. We recommend using only lukewarm water for cleaning purposes.

Slide Section

Pour a small amount of lukewarm water into slide section and work the slide up and down. Remove outer slide. Clean interior of both outer

and inner slides with flexible bore cleaner. Dry thoroughly. Use a lint-free cloth for exterior surfaces and a cleaning rod completely wrapped

with lint-free cloth for interior surfaces.

Bell Section

Run lukewarm water through bell section. A flexible bore cleaner can be used to clean gooseneck and tuning slide. Rinse and drain. If your trombone has a rotor section, remove all tuning slides and run lukewarm water through all tubing. A flexible bore cleaner can be used on interior surfaces. Rinse and drain. Dry thoroughly using a lint-free cloth.

Lacquer Finishes

Lacquer finishes can be cleaned and protected through the use of a Selmer Lacquer Polishing Cloth or Selmer Lacquer Polish. Silver or metal polishing cloths or cream polishes should not be used on lacquer finishes.

Notice—Stradivarius trombones with an optional Sterling Plus bell are coated with a protective lacquer finish. Silver cloths and polishes should not be used on these instruments.

Silver-plated Finishes

Silver-plated instruments can be cleaned and protected through the use of Selmer or Bach Silver Polishing Cloths or Selmer Silver Polish.

Mouthpiece

Rinse with lukewarm water after each use. Clean throat and backbore with mouthpiece brush.

Lubrication

Slide Section

Remove outer slide. Apply a small amount of Bach Slide Cream to inner slide stockings. Work a thin film of cream onto each stocking and up remainder of inner slides. Apply one drop of Bach Slide Cream Additive to each stocking. Spray inner

slides with water, attach outer slide and work up and down to distribute cream. Re-apply water as needed.

OR

Remove outer slide. Apply a small amount of Selmer Liquid Slide Cream along full length of each inner slide, attach outer slide and work up and down to distribute cream.

Tuning Slide(s)

Remove tuning slide(s). Apply a small amount of Bach Tuning Slide Grease to each slide and spread over entire surface. Insert tuning slide completely into receivers and wipe off excess grease with a soft cloth.

Rotor Mechanism

Remove main tuning slide and engage rotor half way. Pour a small amount of Bach Valve Oil into tuning slide receiver. Work rotor back and forth to spread oil. Replace tuning slide. Remove rotor cap and apply one drop of Bach Rotor Oil to center of mechanism. Replace cap. Remove rotor stop screw and apply one drop of Bach Rotor Oil to center of mechanism. Replace screw. Work rotor back and forth to spread  oil. Ball bearing leakage can be lubricated with either Bach Rotor Oil or Bach Tuning Slide Grease.
